METROLOGY ENABLED

Measurement uncertainty is given much thought in every application where measurements play a vital role. Interestingly the uncertainty assessment is often late or even after the development process is completed. Quality control on the measurement process requires that an uncertainty budget is determined and the equipment used is properly calibrated.  

The Metrology Enabled experience: Evaluating measurement uncertainties from the start, or incorporating the dominant uncertainty components in the actual measurement sequences, can significantly improve the efficiency of the measurement and/or the overall measurement uncertainty in the measurement process. From an investment point of view comprehensive uncertainty budgeting at an early stage can show where to "cut corners" in measurements or where/how to simplify calibration steps, tailor-pick the reference standards, optimise the precision/quality of measurement equipment needed (good is good enough) and optimise maintenance schemes. Ideally measurement uncertainty evaluation and implementation is an intrinsic part of the measurement strategy and is embedded in the measurement method employed. 

As a young PhD student the founder has had the privilege to grow up and mature with 25+ years in national measurement institute environments on two continents working on absolute (inter)national scale realisations, calibrating reference standards for industry, developing new techniques in closing the traceability gap towards industry, provide training courses and perform ISO-17025 assessments globally at national measurement institutes, calibration laboratories and testing facilities. Five enablers are started in the Metrology Enabled initiative. 

Metrology Enabled research is focussed on making new techniques/methods available to calibration laboratories through peer-review articles and implementation support.

Metrology Enabled consultancy is focussed on making YouTube content available, including interactive responses to comments/questions. 

Metrology Enabled gadgets are focussed on making 3D printed tools, metrology-improving add-ons available to calibration laboratories.

Metrology Enabled software is focussed on making uncertainty budgets and acquisition software available for implementing specific calibration measurements.

Metrology Enabled remotely is focussed on online and tailored hands-on training in temperature measurement and/or implementing automation in temperature calibration. It starts with receiving a small but practical 3D-printer and complementary instructions. The exchange, testing and improved through iterations of 3D-printed objects are key in Metrology Enabled remotely. Ideally suited and proven to be very effective for training/implementation projects overseas. A bonus at the end of the project is the realisation of design and 3D-print capability for future in-house improvement actions.
